TV isn't always terrible... Yesterday I had the good fortune to watch both the first episode of season two of Deadwood and the new incarnation of Doctor Who. The two programs couldn't be more different from each other but share some great writing. Here's a couple of quotes. See if you can match them up to the right show: "I can feel it. The turn of the Earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour and the entire planet is hurtling round the sun at 67 thousand miles an hour and I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world and if we let go... That's who I am." and "He don't know if he's breathing or taking it in through fucking gills, he is that fucking cuntstruck. They're afloat in some fairy fucking bubble. Him, her snatch and his stupid fucking badge..." I've already mentioned the return of the good Doctor over on Londonist but I can add that the new TARDIS interior owes a lot to Farscape and the fact that there is a killer wheelie-bin in the mix just adds to the fun. Deadwood had a hard act to follow as the first season was so good and they lost Keith Carradine along the way but the sight of Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant throwing each other off a balcony into the filth below showed that the show hasn't lost its edge. Watching these two butt heads is part of the pleasure but the main draw for me is the language. I don't just mean the swearing (and fuck, there's a lot of it) but rather the Shakespearean flow that the dialogue takes. It amazes me that the actors involved can pull it off so well when most American actors get paid for talking the worst kind of mindless drivel on shows like CSI. In other news I saw with some sadness that Debra Hill had died. I was only watching The Fog a few nights ago but tonight I think I'll load up Halloween. I'm amused to see that there is a remake of The Fog on the way. Be interesting to see how they handle that especially since the director is white hot after making videos for MC Hammer and Michael Jackson... For. Fuck's. Sake. Mike is writing to The Dead Kennedys
