I stand corrected - Wolverine has an endo-skeleton - sorry Doc. I tend to concentrate more on his sideburns than his metallic attributes - all of which does remind me that I need to add the Sentinels - I don't wanna go overboard with comic-book robots but they did feature in the X Men cartoon and I guess will crop up in the current movie franchise before too long. Damn, but I feel sorry for Hugh Jackman - he lands the best role in recent history and does a fantastic job with Logan only to sign up for 'Swordfish' - bad film, fat Travolta and expensive breasts that went to waste because all attention was on Jackman's earring - who the fuck thought that up? and now the poor bastard is in 'Kate & Leopold' with Meg Ryan - I saw the trailer and wanted to hit someone... He must be panting for the X Men sequel - which I notice has the catchy title of 'X2'. Where did this begin? 'T2' maybe? What a load of bollocks - maybe we should rebrand The Godfather Part II as GF2 - fucking laziness. Sheesh.
So I started work today - thanks for all the email, text messages and phone calls of encouragement... and yes I did have a good day if a little odd. It's such a sideways step for me that it was a little strange to get to grips with. The job itself is fun as are the people - not many of them were expecting me so I came across as a short term student temp type of guy as opposed to the career driven editorial type that I wanna be - or maybe wanna be. Its odd to be in an office environment again - I've been out of that lifestyle for a few years now and I do miss the social aspects of the oldjob - although Paul who I was working with today seems like a good guy. Plus its fun to see Paola a lot and see how a publishing outfit ticks... Strange too to be in central London - too near to comic shops for comfort and it'll be all too easy to fall into the nearest cinema after work... I'm still finding my feet obviously and I'm not too sure what Ill be doing there long term but I'll have the opportunity to pick a lot of brains over the next few weeks.
After taking the train in I decided to grab a tube home - so many people were asleep - just about everyone sat down was slack jawed and drooling and even the people leaning against me were nodding off. I worked hard myself but it wasn't as hard as a day in the bookstore - it makes me wonder what all these sleepers around me had been doing all day and exactly what it was they were working for... I was eager to get home and find something creative to get my teeth into while everyone else looked ready for a good nights sleep and then the 'repeat' button... no wonder so many people 'live for Fridays'. I found the trip home a little saddening.
So tonight I have some work to do on 'Big Trouble in Little China' - the special edition DVD I picked up in the states is finally being released here in May so I've got a head start to put something together and with a bit of luck one of the magazines will pick it up. Aside from that I want to do a little website tweaking and have a little fiction tidying up session - I'm trying to bring some short story pieces together under one theme and see if there's a chance of expanding them. I can see I'm going to try and get back to my old 4 hours of sleep habit from Uni. but I'm worried I'm too old for all that. I still feel better after a full 4 hours than I do six though - I read somewhere a long time ago that we sleep in 4 hour periods and its actually healthier to get one 4 hour period that a 7 hour one - I guess in a perfect world we'd sleep for 12 hours - I wonder how many of my fellow commuters actually felt worse after their tube naps... Im sure someone somewhere is wasting money in just such a study - probably in California.
Jess is working on tight essay deadlines for the next couple of days so I can either set up the other PC or give this one up for a large portion of the evening.
Duncan will be on his way to Helsinki now - lucky bastard. Hope he has fun.
Mark rang me from the bookstore and that did give me a real pang of 'homesickness' - weird huh? - I could hear Evie and Ally shouting hello in the background and for a few seconds it seemed like I should be back there - still, onwards and upwards and all that. Its the people I miss not the job - the job was getting seriously petty by the time I quit and more than anything its a relief to be free of it. Now if I can just settle down into something else...
I got a really nice email from Kerry too (I really need to get that 'list of characters' up on here) and she is doing the hardest job - makes most of my online whining look even more trite than usual. The main thing she reminded me though is that she is one of the best people I've ever met.
Tomorrow should be fun as I'll be on my own and in the deep end for most of the day but I'm looking forward to making the most of the weekend as they are one thing that I'm not used to having.
I'm gonna run and let Jess do some research on Beowulf or some such olde englishe bollockse...
Mike is blogging to a very nice Indian takeaway that was simply too too big.
