I did a mass mailing last night for help with the Robot List and I'm happy to say that I'm already getting more aid than we give to the third world:
"Buffy robot in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, whom Spike shags - Stepford Wives also in the Stepford Wives, with gorgeous Katherine Ross and scary Nanette Newman." Thanks Aruna - Buffy is a big blind spot of mine but I'll look into it - It's so long since I've seen The Stepford Wives - I know in the crappy TV movie sequel that the husbands are actually replacing the uppity females with robots but was that the 'twist' at the end of the first one too? I guess I'll have to rewatch some of this stuff.
"The Daleks from 'Dr Who' - We have some concerns regarding this, were these not living beings, in a mechanical suit? same with davros?" Yes Stu - both these creations are closer to Stephen Hawkings than C3PO - so should I cut them from this list? I think the Daleks lost their humanity early on so maybe they should be considered 'robots' - I'll take more advice on this one.
"saturn 5 robot?" You mean Hector? Good robot with evil Harvey (dubbed) Keitel's mind? Stopped Kirk Douglas from shagging Farrah Fawcett (no wonder he had a stroke) - he's on the list.
"were the borg robots? or are we just including anything with mechanics?" They are cyborgs I guess - a bit like the Bionic Man - maybe I should include anything with mechanics - but its hard to know where to draw the line - should I now include KITT from 'Knight Rider'? Id like to. Thanks to Stu and Andy.
Doc Graham: "Anyway, there's a whole bunch of robots from Star Wars you missed out, but the ones that really do *need* to be on there are IG-88 and 4-LOM, both of whom are Bounty Hunters from Empire Strikes Back. And in answer to your questions, I wouldn't count either the Tripods or the Agents. Oh, I just thought of another: the floating robot called Zax from the 80's American TV show Benji, Zax and the Alien Prince. I'm sure I can think of more, though... Actually was Bertha (that animated kids show) a robot or just a machine? I think the list needs to have a specific definition of 'robot'."
ok I'll work on a Mikeish definition of what I want robot to mean. I'm guessing that there are a couple hundred robots from 'Star Wars' that I could add but you are right in pointing out IG-88 and 4-LOM - if I had the Star Wars figures then they should go in the list. Yeah the Tripods and Agents will be expelled. Fucking hell - 'Benji, Zax and the Alien Prince' forgot all about that one! 'Bertha' robot or just a machine? Well she had a face so that's gotta count for something...
Over night (No Aruna - I never sleep) I remembered the Fembots from 'The Bionic Man/Woman' , The 'Flint' movies starring James Coburn and most recently in 'Austin Powers' There was also a robotic prison guard from a 'Buck Rogers' episode who came across like the Terminator but in very tight black tights (Can you get non-tight tights?) - he homed in on bracelets around the prisoners wrists. Does 'Automan' count in a similar way to 'Tron'? For now I'm ruling out Japanese animation because I'd need years to compile all those guys but I'm leaving in 'Transformers' for obvious reasons - they rock.
The bloody Cybermats from 'Dr Who' as well I guess - then there was Chameleon too.
Stu - weren't there robots in 'Star Fleet'? What about the cubes in 'Terrorhawks?'
Is this getting out of hand yet? I have an urge to add 'The Wombles' just for the hell of it - plus they are local - I could get an interview
