GOOD GRIEF
I'd just finished watching the Peanuts movies I'd downloaded last night when the alarm guy rang the doorbell. 8am sharp. I sipped coffee and chatted to him about the building as he fixed lights to his head and half disappeared into one of the walls. It seems we are the only flat to have an alarm system not because the previous owner was paranoid (although he was) but because this flat was the first one completed and kitted out as a show apartment for the rest of the building.
He also remembered being here to activate the system on the same day that the new kitchen floor was being fitted. The guy who lived here before us had the old one removed and this plush marble one put in but on the day the workmen arrived they turned up with the wrong tiles so he had them start over. The guys were only here for the day - down from the north to do this apparently simple job and then have some fun in town. It seems that they were kept here for most of the day and they were so eager to just leave that they gave all the previous tiles to the alarm system guy. He was grinning when he told me that part of our old kitchen now serves as his patio.
Small world.
